Journal 6: Video Conferencing

My educational tool is video conferencing. Video conferencing is defined as a technology device to “communicate in real time with two or more people at different locations via video” according to www.bu.edu/webcentral/learning/av/glossary.html. In this particular area they were disussing IVC, Interactive Videoconferencing.

According to one of the members, he stated that he used the interactive videoconferencing to connect third graders in Nashville with forth graders in Japan, and a dog musher from Alaska for his second graders. A member from Arizona talks about using interactive television which allows high school students interested in the medical field a chance to attend autopsies live and participating within the discussions while the process is performed to help determine the cause of death. Another member talks about coordinating IVC projects for 56 districts throughout central Texas. Her biggest would be Monster Match.

It was very interesting learning about all the different ways that teachers and schools are using video conferencing within schools; from communicating within their own schools to having conferencing with other schools. It was interesting to see most of the teachers not be in favor of live shows, but rather “well produced shows”.

I like this idea for both the classroom use and the use for teacher collaboration. I know when I was in school we used a studio to broadcast our daily announcements to all the students in their homeroom. That was educational for all of us who participated in the production process and for the students watching.

I love this idea!! I think that videoconferencing is a great tool to use in education because it gives students a chance to explore what else is out there and also gives them another way to enhance their learning opportunities!
