ETPD stands for educational technology-related professional development which has different variations. ETPD varies by seven aspects: general purposes and goals; the specific learning objectives that ETPD sessions and programs address; the curriculum content areas to whichthey are related; the student grade levels for which the strategies and tools presented are appropriate; the professional development models used to structure ETPD sessions; the ways in which differing teacher characteristics are addressed; and the ways in which the professional development is evaluated and teacher learning is assessed. If the providers consider the seven aspects during planning, they can ensure the effectiveness of technology-related professional development.

In this article they discuss the four items which most ETPD providers have worked the least: ETPD goals; ETPD models; choosing and combining ETPD goals, models, and methods according to teacher characteristics; and assessing the efficacy of ETPD designs.
ETPD models can be classified into five general types of professional developemnts: instructor-organized sessions; individualized learning; collaborative learning; data-based inquiry; and materials and approaches development.
