Are Schools Inhibiting 21st Century Learning?

Nagel starts the article by stating, "The idea of technology in education is to enhance learning, not limit it". But unfortunately there are barriers put in place that do not allow them to facilitate they way they were taught. And once again the teachers, administrations, and teachers are oblivious to this fact. The survey spoke for itself, while 66 percent of administrators, 43 percent of parents, and 47 percent of teachers stated "local schools are doing a good job preparing students for jobs and careers of the future," the students did not agree. When the question was asked to middle and high school students, 40 percent of the students stated the teachers were limiting their use of technology within schools, and 45 percent stated that the security measures used were taking away from their ability to use the technology.

There is a fine line that schools are faced with today when it comes to the internet. They are required to have security and safety issues in place when the internet is involved but at the same time parents and the community want schools to take the full advantage of the educational tools including those of new and improved technology. Everyone realizes that there does need to be reasonable parameters of use within the schools.

Teachers and students were able to finally agree on some benefits to electronic learning, especially educational gaming. "51 percent of students in grades 6 through 12 indicated that games make it easier to understand difficult concepts. Forty-six percent said they'd learn more about a subject if information were presented in a game format; 44 percent said gaming "would make it more interesting to practice problems; and about a third said that "the use of games in schools will help them learn how to work in teams and see the direct results of their problem solving activities."

When it came to teachers, 65 percent stated that they thought educational gaming would be a good asset for students with different learning styles and to help students become engaged in their coursework. But unfortunately, at the present time only 11 precent of the teachers that were surveyed stated they were currently using educational games in their classrooms.
